How Many Sockets Should a Modern Home Have?

A NAPIT registered Kent electrician's guide to socket numbers, placement and modern requirements for every room in your home.

One of the most common questions we get asked as electricians across Kent is: how many sockets should a modern home actually have? The answer has changed dramatically over the past decade. With the explosion of smart devices, home offices, kitchen gadgets and USB-charged electronics, the old rule of one double socket per room simply does not cut it anymore.

In this guide, we break down the current UK guidance on socket numbers room by room, explain why many Kent homes are still under-socketed, and advise when it is time to call a NAPIT registered electrician for an upgrade.

The Current UK Guidance: What BS 7671 Says

BS 7671 — the UK's wiring regulations — does not specify an exact number of sockets per room. Instead, it states that there must be "sufficient socket-outlets to meet the requirements of the installation." In practical terms, this means your electrician must assess your likely usage and install accordingly.

However, the IET's On-Site Guide offers practical recommendations that most NAPIT registered electricians follow as a baseline. For a typical 3-bedroom home, this works out to roughly 20–25 double sockets as a minimum — though modern lifestyles often demand significantly more.

Room-by-Room Socket Recommendations

Kitchen: 8–10 Double Sockets Minimum

The kitchen is the most power-hungry room in any home. Current guidance recommends a minimum of 6 double sockets, but in reality most modern kitchens benefit from 8–10. You need dedicated circuits for the oven, hob, dishwasher and fridge-freezer, plus general sockets for worktop appliances like kettles, toasters, microwaves, coffee machines and blenders.

Under-cabinet lighting, extractor fans and boiling water taps also need power. Many of our Kent customers in Deal, Dover and Canterbury opt for pop-up worktop sockets or additional USB-A and USB-C outlets for charging tablets and phones while cooking.

Living Room: 6–8 Double Sockets

A typical living room now powers a TV, soundbar, set-top box, games console, streaming device, lamp, phone chargers and often a laptop or tablet. That's 8–10 devices before guests even arrive. We recommend at least 6–8 double sockets positioned around the room, including behind the TV area and beside seating.

Home Office: 4–6 Double Sockets Plus USB

With remote working now standard, the home office has become one of the most socket-demanding spaces. You need power for a desktop PC or docking station, monitor, printer, desk lamp, router, phone charger and often a heater or fan. We recommend 4–6 double sockets plus at least one USB-A/USB-C outlet per desk position.

Bedrooms: 4–6 Double Sockets Each

Each bedroom should have 4–6 double sockets: beside the bed for phone chargers and bedside lamps, near the wardrobe for hair styling tools, and at least one general wall socket for vacuum cleaners or future use. USB bedside sockets are increasingly popular — they eliminate the need for bulky adaptors and free up the main socket for lamps.

Bathroom: 1 Shaver Socket (Zone 3 Only)

Bathroom socket rules are strict due to water proximity. Only shaver sockets are permitted within 3 metres of a bath or shower. Many Kent homeowners ask us to install additional sockets just outside the bathroom door for hair dryers and electric toothbrushes, which is a safe and practical solution.

Hallway & Landing: 2–4 Double Sockets

Often overlooked, hallways and landings benefit from sockets for vacuum cleaners, Wi-Fi extenders, smart home hubs and decorative lighting. A double socket near the front door is also ideal for a smart doorbell transformer.

Garage, Utility & Outdoor: 2–4 Weatherproof Sockets

Garages and utility rooms need dedicated power for washing machines, tumble dryers, freezers and power tools. Outdoor weatherproof sockets (IP-rated and RCD protected) are essential for garden equipment, pressure washers and EV charging points.

Signs Your Home Needs More Sockets

If you are relying on extension leads, multi-way adaptors or daisy-chained power strips, your home is almost certainly under-socketed. These are not safe long-term solutions — they overload circuits, create fire hazards and are a clear sign that you need a professional socket upgrade.

Other warning signs include sockets that feel warm, plugs that do not fit securely, discoloured or cracked faceplates, and frequent tripping of circuit breakers when multiple appliances are used. If you notice any of these issues anywhere in Kent, call L Fowler Electrical on 07966 182979 for a safety inspection.

USB Sockets and Smart Switches: The Modern Upgrade

Modern socket upgrades go far beyond basic double sockets. USB-A and USB-C outlets are now standard in our Kent installations — they let you charge phones, tablets and wireless headphones directly without using an adaptor. Smart switches add app and voice control to your lighting, and dimmer switches create atmosphere while saving energy.

As a certified Lutron installer, L Fowler Electrical also offers the most sophisticated smart switch systems available. These can be retrofitted to most existing lighting circuits, making them a cost-effective upgrade for any Kent home.

How Much Does Adding Sockets Cost in Kent?

Adding a single double socket in Kent typically costs between £80 and £150, depending on the location and how the cable needs to be run. Adding multiple sockets at the same time is more cost-effective — we often fit 4–6 sockets in a single day for a discounted rate. USB sockets cost slightly more, and smart switches range from £120–£250 fitted depending on the brand and complexity.

We cover all of Kent including Deal, Dover, Canterbury, Folkestone, Margate, Ramsgate, Broadstairs, Faversham, Whitstable, Herne Bay, Ashford, Sittingbourne and all surrounding villages. Call 07966 182979 for a free, no-obligation quote.
