Three-Phase Power for Commercial Premises in Kent: What You Need to Know

Does your Kent business need three-phase electrical power? A complete guide from an experienced commercial electrician.

Three-phase electrical power is the standard for commercial and industrial electrical supply across the UK — but many Kent business owners are unfamiliar with what it means, when they need it, and how to get it. This guide explains three-phase power in plain English, helps you understand whether your Kent business needs it, and outlines what's involved in getting it installed.

What Is Three-Phase Power?

Standard domestic electricity in the UK is single-phase — one live conductor at 230V AC. Three-phase power uses three live conductors, each carrying 230V but 120 degrees out of phase with each other. This gives a line-to-line voltage of approximately 400V and allows significantly higher electrical loads to be distributed evenly across the three phases.

Three-phase power provides three times the power capacity of single-phase supply at the same current rating. This means thinner cables can carry the same total power, and large motors and equipment run more efficiently. Three-phase power also provides smoother, more efficient operation for motors — which is why virtually all large commercial and industrial electrical loads use three-phase motors.

Which Kent Businesses Need Three-Phase Power?

Many Kent businesses operate perfectly well on single-phase power — a small office, retail shop, café or service business with a normal electrical load will not need three-phase. However, three-phase power is typically required or strongly recommended for:

  • Commercial kitchens — Professional catering equipment including combination ovens, induction hobs, commercial dishwashers and refrigeration can easily exceed a single-phase supply capacity
  • Manufacturing and industrial premises — CNC machines, lathes, welders, compressors and large motors all typically require three-phase supply
  • Large HVAC systems — Commercial air conditioning units above approximately 5kW typically use three-phase motors
  • Commercial EV charging — 22kW rapid EV chargers require three-phase supply; large multi-point charging installations also benefit from three-phase to balance loads
  • Large office buildings — Large offices with significant power loads benefit from three-phase distribution for load balancing across floors and zones
  • Hair and beauty salons — Multiple high-wattage styling equipment and salon heating can approach single-phase limits
  • Agricultural premises — Grain driers, irrigation pumps and large barn lighting across Kent farms typically require three-phase supply

How Do You Get Three-Phase Power at a Kent Business Premises?

If three-phase power is not already available at your Kent premises, there are two routes to getting it:

1. Apply to the Distribution Network Operator (DNO): In Kent, the DNO is UK Power Networks (UKPN). You will need to apply for a new three-phase connection or an upgrade to your existing supply. This involves an application, a site survey by UKPN, a quotation for the network connection work and a timescale for the work. The cost of the DNO connection work is separate from the internal electrical work and is paid directly to UKPN. This process can take several weeks to months depending on the work required.

2. Internal wiring upgrade: If three-phase supply is already available at your premises (as is the case at most commercial properties and industrial units in Kent), the work is simply internal — a NAPIT registered commercial electrician installs a new three-phase distribution board, runs three-phase circuits to the required equipment, and provides a full Electrical Installation Certificate on completion. This is typically much faster and less expensive than a new supply application.

How Much Does Three-Phase Power Installation Cost in Kent?

Costs vary significantly depending on whether a three-phase supply exists at the premises and the scope of internal wiring required:

  • Internal wiring only (three-phase supply already at premises): Typically £1,500–£5,000 depending on the complexity of the distribution board and circuit requirements
  • New supply application (including DNO connection work): Can be £5,000–£30,000+ depending on the distance from the network and the capacity required
